Leigh Park Residents Work Towards a Centre

21st February 2007

There isn’t anywhere obvious or accessible for residents of Leigh Park, Wimborne, to get together for meetings, events and activities. It’s a problem they have been raising for some time. Most recently through the Community Survey last summer (funded by the Health Theme Action Group of the East Dorset Community Partnership). Over 30 people came along to a meeting on the 30th of January to offer their support to getting a Community Centre of some kind. Of those 22 ‘signed up’ to join a Working Group.

“To become the heart of the community, used by everyone, it’s important that any facility is run by local people for local people” explains? “We’ve got to take this opportunity to find out exactly what our community would use it and how it could be provided – with the support of organisations such as East Dorset District Council and Dorset Community Action – whilst we have the current possibilities and opportunities”. At the first meeting of the Leigh Park Community Centre Group they began getting to know each other and to think about what they need to do to build a strong group and action plan.
