ROUT OF THE RHODODENDRONS
12th January 2010
The hard work and determination of the Community Payback Team has resulted in an astonishing transformation of two dark impenetrable jungles near Hampreston into light filled woodlands in which bluebells and primroses can bloom again after many years exclusion.
The Team have been helping out with The Return of the Natives Project, promoted and funded by the East Dorset Community Partnership. The Project aims to clear invasive Cherry Laurel and Common Rhododendron from waysides and woodlands in East Dorset District.
Dr. Lesley Haskins, volunteer leader of the Project explained:
“These two alien and evergreen species rapidly take over and oust our native and familiar woodland wildlife. The Project aims both to restore the wildlife and to enhance appreciation of it. There is thus a double benefit. The Community Payback Team have achieved tremendous results for the Project in a remarkably short period of time. Their contribution is hugely appreciated.”
Mervyn Harris, who has led the Team since work started last winter said: “My team have really enjoyed the challenge of this woodland work. They have learnt new skills, built team spirit, exercised hard and been instantly able to see the results of their efforts. We have finished our first woods in record time and are now looking forward to tackling more.”
